Most helpful customer reviews on Amazon. Verified Purchase. This is a good book that gives the whys of chess positions not just variations. Also gives good background on each of the featured players. Most of the games of Steinitz, Lasker and Botvinnik are well know but here the author includes a story with them based on positional themes or merely the idea that they found something that works. The author presents innovation as a tool for winning and if a defense is eventually found, then onto another innovation.

There are comparison games sprinkled into various points of the opening moves which helps to get an overall picture of the openings played. Both Korchnoi and Ivanchuck played well into their 40's and the author claims it is their search for new ideas and moves that makes them work well.
